Handmade Wool Carpets in India: What Handmade Really Means and How to Check
Search for a handmade wool carpet and you will find thousands of listings that all say handmade. They are not all made the same way. Some are hand knotted over months, some are hand tufted in days, some are flat woven with no pile at all, and a few are machine made with the word handmade in the title. This guide explains what each label means, how to check a carpet yourself, and what to look for when you buy a handmade wool carpet in India.
Quick answer
- Handmade is an umbrella word. What matters is the method: hand knotted, hand tufted or hand woven.
- Turn the carpet over. A back that mirrors the front is hand knotted. A plain cloth back is hand tufted.
- Ask for the fibre in writing: 100% wool, wool and viscose, or a synthetic.
- Hand tufted carpets are handmade too, but they are faster to make and cost less than hand knotted ones.
- The Bhadohi GI tag protects the name of a regional craft. It does not tell you how a particular carpet was made.
The four labels you will see
| Label | How it is made | The back of the carpet | Feel and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand knotted | Every knot is tied by hand on a loom | Mirrors the front design, with a fine grid of knots | Dense and firm, highest price |
| Hand tufted | Yarn is punched through a cloth backing with a tufting gun and set with latex | Plain cloth backing | Plush from day one, mid price |
| Hand woven (flat weave, dhurrie, kilim) | Warp and weft are interlaced on a loom, with no knots and no pile | Looks much like the front | Thin and light, lower price |
| Machine made | Woven or tufted by machine | Uniform rows, often a synthetic backing | Lowest price, flattens faster |
Is a hand tufted carpet really handmade?
Yes. A person guides the tufting gun, chooses the colours and carves the finish, so it is handmade. It is simply a different, faster method from hand knotting, which is why it costs less. Our full guide to hand tufted vs hand knotted carpets explains the trade-offs in detail.
Why wool is the fibre to look for
- It springs back. Wool recovers after being walked on, so a good wool carpet keeps its shape.
- It is comfortable year round. It feels warm in winter and breathes in summer.
- It resists stains. Wool is naturally stain-resistant, which helps in a busy living room.
Wool and viscose blends add a soft sheen to the surface, but they need gentler care and should not be soaked. A listing should say whether a carpet is 100% wool or a blend. If it only says premium or soft, ask. Natural wool also sheds a little in the first weeks, which is normal and fades with regular vacuuming.
Bhadohi and the GI tag
Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, form India's best-known handmade carpet belt. Hand made Carpet of Bhadohi is registered as a Geographical Indication, with a certificate dated 3 September 2010. You can read the entry on the official Varanasi district page. A GI protects the name of a regional craft. It does not replace checking the back of a carpet or asking a seller how a specific piece was made. Rugverse is based in Khamaria, Bhadohi.
Five checks before you buy
- Turn it over. Ask for a photo of the back if the listing does not show it.
- Look at the fringe. On a hand knotted carpet the fringe is part of the structure. On a tufted carpet it is stitched on afterwards.
- Read the fibre line. Look for 100% wool or a clearly stated blend.
- Compare prices at the same size. Wool and hand work cost money, so a price far below the rest deserves a question.
- Check the warranty. Many of our listings state Handmade in India and a 1 year warranty. Read what any seller's warranty covers.

Vacuum with suction only, blot spills straight away and use cool water with a mild detergent. Never use hot water, and do not soak a hand tufted carpet. See our guide on how to clean a wool carpet at home.
Frequently asked questions
What is a handmade wool carpet?
It is a carpet made largely by hand from wool yarn. The method can be hand knotted, hand tufted or hand woven, and the method decides how long it lasts and what it costs.
What is the difference between hand woven and hand knotted?
A hand woven carpet is made by interlacing warp and weft threads with no knots. A hand knotted carpet has individual knots tied around the warp threads to form a pile.
How do I tell if a carpet is really handmade?
Turn it over. A hand knotted carpet shows its design on the back, a hand tufted carpet has a plain cloth backing, and a machine made carpet has perfectly uniform rows. Ask the seller to confirm the method.
Do handmade wool carpets shed?
Yes, lightly, in the first few weeks or months. It is normal for natural wool and fades with regular vacuuming on suction only.
How long does a handmade wool carpet last?
A good hand tufted wool carpet typically lasts around 7 to 15 years with care. A hand knotted carpet can last for decades.
Where in India are handmade carpets made?
The Bhadohi and Mirzapur belt in eastern Uttar Pradesh is the best-known centre for handmade carpets, with other weaving clusters in Rajasthan and Kashmir.
