Diwali Home Decor 2026: How to Refresh Your Living Room with a Carpet

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November. That gives you about two weeks. Most of us repaint, rehang lights and swap cushions. The floor, the largest surface in the room, is the one thing we forget. This guide shows how a carpet can refresh your living room for Diwali: which size to pick, which colours work, which shape and pile suit a house full of guests, and how to keep it safe around diyas, rangoli and wax.

Why a carpet is the fastest Diwali home decor upgrade

  • It anchors the room. A good carpet pulls the sofa, chairs and centre table into one arranged space instead of separate pieces.
  • It is soft where people actually sit. During Diwali, guests, children and relatives end up on the floor. Wool is comfortable for that, and it warms a room as the evenings cool.
  • It costs far less than new furniture. Our carpets start at ₹5,999 for a 3 x 5 ft size, and many 4 x 6 ft designs start around ₹10,799.

Step 1: Get the size right

The most common mistake is buying a carpet that is too small. It ends up looking like a doormat in the middle of the room. Aim for a carpet big enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it, and leave about 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) of bare floor between the carpet and the walls.

Before you order, mark the size on the floor with painter's tape. It takes five minutes and shows you exactly how the carpet will look.

Space Suggested size
Small living room (a sofa and a chair or two) 5 x 8 ft
Medium living room 6 x 9 ft or 8 x 10 ft
Large living room 8 x 10 ft or bigger
Beside a sofa, near the entrance, or between seating spots 3 x 5 ft or 4 x 6 ft

Sizes differ by design, so check the size list on each product page. Not sure what suits your home? Our guide on how to choose the right carpet for every room goes deeper.

Step 2: Pick a Diwali-ready colour

Choose one dominant colour and two supporting colours. Everything else in the room, from marigold garlands to brass diyas, will then look deliberate.

Warm and festive

Deep reds, rust, terracotta and gold tones sit naturally next to diyas, brass and flowers. Browse our red carpets and premium collection for rich, warm options.

Neutral canvas

Ivory, beige and grey let your decor provide the colour through cushions, flowers and lights, and they still look right after the festival. Our Halcyon Wave Carpet comes in grey and beige and starts at ₹10,799.

Rich jewel tones

Emerald, teal and deep blue feel festive without being the usual red and gold. Look at our Emerald Green Irregular Carpet from ₹10,799 or the Teal Blue Peacock Carpet from ₹6,999.

Step 3: Choose the shape and the pile

Rectangular is the safe choice and suits most living rooms. Round carpets soften a boxy room and work well under a centre table or in a corner seating area. Browse our round rugs. If you want a statement piece, an irregular shape adds movement to the floor, and our irregular carpet guide explains how to style one. See the full irregular carpets collection.

On texture, many of our wool carpets have a 20 mm pile and an anti-skid canvas backing, so they feel plush underfoot and stay put when children run across them. They are also listed as kids and pet friendly, which helps in a house full of visitors.

Step 4: Festival-proof your carpet

Diwali brings flames, powders and wax into the room where your carpet lives. A few habits protect it.

  • Keep diyas and candles off the carpet. Place them on metal thalis or trays on a tiled or stone surface, away from the edge. Wool is naturally more flame-resistant than many synthetic fibres, but it is not fireproof, so never leave a flame unattended near it.
  • Make rangoli at the entrance, not on the carpet. If kumkum or rangoli colour lands on the carpet, vacuum the dry powder first and do not wet it, because wet powder turns into a dye.
  • Deal with wax gently. Let it harden, then lift it off with a blunt edge. Do not use an iron or hair dryer on wool.
  • Put a shoe rack near the door, and use a runner in the entrance or hallway to catch grit before it reaches the living room.

Room-by-room Diwali carpet ideas

  • Living room: one large carpet under the seating area. Browse living room carpets.
  • Entrance and hallway: a runner that welcomes guests and protects the floor.
  • Dining room: a flatter pile is easier to vacuum under chairs on busy dinner nights. See dining room rugs.
  • Guest bedroom: a soft carpet beside the bed for relatives who are staying over. See bedroom carpets.
  • Kids room: a soft, cushioned surface for play. See kids room carpets.

Your Diwali carpet checklist

  1. Measure the room and the seating area, and tape out the carpet size.
  2. Decide your colour mood: warm and festive, neutral, or jewel tones.
  3. Choose the shape and size from your measurements.
  4. Check the delivery estimate at checkout and order early, so the carpet is down before guests arrive.
  5. Unroll it, give it time to settle, and air the room. A new tufted carpet can smell faintly of rubber for the first couple of weeks and may shed lightly in the first months. Both are normal.
  6. Keep flames away, vacuum with suction only, and blot any spill straight away.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November, and the festival runs for five days.

Which carpet colour is best for Diwali?

Warm tones such as red, rust and gold feel the most festive. Neutral carpets in ivory, beige or grey are the most flexible because your decor adds the colour and the carpet still works all year.

What size carpet should I buy for my living room?

A 5 x 8 ft carpet suits a small living room, 6 x 9 ft or 8 x 10 ft suits a medium one, and 8 x 10 ft or larger suits a big one. Make sure at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it.

Can I place diyas or candles on a carpet?

No. Put them on metal trays on a tiled or stone surface, away from the carpet and any fabric. Wool resists flame better than many synthetics, but it can still be damaged by heat and wax.

How do I remove rangoli colour or wax from a carpet?

For rangoli powder, vacuum the dry powder first and do not wet it. For wax, let it harden and lift it off gently. Our wool carpet cleaning guide has the full steps.

Are wool carpets good for homes with kids and pets?

Many of our wool carpets are listed as kids and pet friendly and have an anti-skid canvas backing. Wool is also forgiving, but you should still blot spills straight away.
