Buy Carpets Online in India: 9 Things to Check Before You Order (2026)

A carpet looks completely different on your floor than it does on a screen, and that is the whole risk of ordering one online. This guide explains how to buy carpets online in India without regret: what to measure, what to turn over, what the numbers on a listing really mean, and which questions to ask the seller before you pay.

Quick answer

  • Measure your seating area, not the whole room, and tape out the carpet size on the floor first.
  • Check how the carpet is made. Turn it over, or ask for a photo of the back.
  • Choose the fibre, pile height and backing to match how busy the room is.
  • Compare prices at the same size. A "from" price is always the smallest size.
  • Confirm warranty, returns, delivery and door or lift clearance before you pay.

Carpet, rug, kaleen, dhurrie: what the words mean

Online listings use these words loosely, which makes searching confusing. This is how they are normally used in India.

Word What it usually means
Carpet The general word for a woven or tufted floor covering, usually room-sized.
Rug Often the same thing, though it tends to describe smaller area pieces.
Kaleen The Hindi and Urdu word for a carpet.
Dhurrie A flat-woven piece with no pile, usually cotton or wool.
Runner A long, narrow carpet for hallways, kitchens and beside the bed.

If a listing says rug and another says carpet, judge them by size, material and construction, not by the word.

1. Measure before you browse

The most common regret is buying a carpet that is one size too small. Measure the seating area, not the room, and aim for a carpet where at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it. Leave about 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) of bare floor between the carpet and the walls.

Space Size to look at
Bedside, entrance or study corner 3 x 5 ft or 4 x 6 ft
Small living room or a bedroom 5 x 7 ft or 5 x 8 ft
Medium living room with a 3-seater and chairs 6 x 9 ft or 8 x 10 ft
Large living room 8 x 10 ft or bigger

Then mark the size on the floor with painter's tape or newspaper and leave it for a day. It costs nothing and prevents most sizing mistakes. Our guide on how to choose the right carpet for every room covers each room in more detail.

2. Find out how it is made

Construction decides how long a carpet lasts and what it costs. There are three you will see online.

  • Hand tufted: yarn is punched through a cloth backing with a tufting gun and held with latex. Faster to make, softer from day one and more affordable. Most carpets in our range are hand tufted.
  • Hand knotted: every knot is tied by hand on a loom. It takes months, costs more and lasts decades.
  • Machine made: woven or tufted by machine, usually the cheapest.

The quickest test is to turn the carpet over. A plain cloth back means hand tufted. A back that mirrors the front design means hand knotted. If you cannot see the back in the listing, ask for a photo. Our full comparison of hand tufted vs hand knotted carpets explains the difference.

3. Check the fibre

  • Wool: springs back after being walked on, feels warm and is naturally resistant to stains. It is the best choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Wool and viscose blends: add a soft sheen to the surface. They look rich but need gentler care.
  • Polyester and microfibre: budget friendly and plush, and often easy to clean, but they usually feel less substantial underfoot.

A good listing states the material clearly, such as 100% wool or wool and viscose. If it only says soft or premium, ask what it is made of.

4. Read the pile height and backing

Pile height is the thickness of the carpet. A thick pile feels plush but takes more effort to vacuum, and it can catch under a door. Many of our wool carpets have a 20 mm pile, which feels soft underfoot. Measure the gap under your doors before ordering a thick carpet.

Backing matters just as much. An anti-skid canvas backing keeps the carpet in place on tiles and marble and is safer for children and older people. Our listings state this, and you should look for the same detail anywhere you buy.

5. Compare prices the right way

A carpet's price rises with its area, so each step up in size costs more than it looks. A 4 x 6 ft carpet has 60 per cent more area than a 3 x 5 ft one, and a 6 x 9 ft carpet has about 54 per cent more area than a 5 x 7 ft one. These are the typical prices in our wool range at the time of writing.

Size Typical price in our wool range
3 x 5 ft From ₹5,999
4 x 6 ft ₹8,799 to ₹12,999
5 x 7 ft ₹11,499 to ₹17,499
6 x 9 ft ₹14,999 to ₹26,999
Hand knotted, 4 x 6 ft From ₹19,199

Treat a price far below the rest as a question, not a bargain. Wool, hand work and good backing all cost money, so ask what the carpet is made of and how. If the budget is fixed, choose the right size in a simpler design rather than a smaller size in a fancier one.

6. Look at the photos closely

Screens change colour, and a carpet changes again in your room's light. Look for close-ups that show the pile and the edge, and a photo of the back. If the listing does not show them, ask the seller. For colour, hold up a fabric swatch or look at your cushions and curtains to judge whether the tone will sit well in the room.

7. Confirm warranty, returns and delivery before you pay

  • Warranty: many of our listings state a 1 year warranty. Whatever the seller, read what it covers.
  • Returns: carpets that are cut or made to order are often not returnable, so read the policy before paying. Ours is on our return policy page.
  • Delivery: check the delivery estimate and who pays for shipping. See our shipping policy.
  • The roll: a large carpet arrives rolled and stiff. Check that it fits through your lift or stairwell.

8. Ask about custom sizes and colours

If your room or colour scheme does not fit the standard sizes, ask about customisation. Our listings note that customisation is available, and you can contact us for a custom design.

9. Plan for the first few weeks

A new hand tufted carpet can smell faintly of rubber for the first couple of weeks and shed lightly for the first few months. Both are normal. Air the room, vacuum with suction only, and put a rug pad underneath. Our guide on how to clean a wool carpet at home covers spills, dust and monsoon damp.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying one size too small.
  • Choosing by photo alone without checking size, material and backing.
  • Ignoring door clearance with a thick pile.
  • Putting a very light carpet in the busiest room.
  • Skipping the rug pad.
  • Comparing a "from" price on one site with a larger size on another.

Your pre-order checklist

  1. Tape out the size and leave it for a day.
  2. Confirm how the carpet is made and what fibre it is.
  3. Check pile height and anti-skid backing.
  4. Compare prices at the same size.
  5. Read the warranty, returns and delivery terms.
  6. Check the roll fits your lift and the carpet clears your doors.
  7. Order a rug pad with it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy carpets online in India?

Yes, if you check the details that matter: material, construction, size, warranty and returns. Buy from a seller who lists these clearly and who can answer questions about the carpet.

How much does a carpet cost in India?

It depends on size, fibre and construction. In our wool range, a 3 x 5 ft carpet starts from ₹5,999, a 4 x 6 ft typically costs ₹8,799 to ₹12,999 and a 6 x 9 ft typically costs ₹14,999 to ₹26,999. Hand knotted carpets cost more.

Which carpet is best for a living room?

A wool carpet in a size that fits under at least the front legs of your seating, with a medium to plush pile and an anti-skid backing, suits most living rooms.

What size carpet should I buy?

Measure your seating area. A 5 x 8 ft carpet suits a small living room, 6 x 9 ft or 8 x 10 ft a medium one, and 8 x 10 ft or bigger a large one.

What is the difference between a carpet and a rug?

In practice the words overlap. Carpet usually means a room-sized piece and rug a smaller area piece, but judge listings by size, material and construction.

How long does a carpet last?

A good hand tufted wool carpet typically lasts around 7 to 15 years with care, while a hand knotted carpet can last for decades.
